There are also administrative staff in diverse roles, with all staff busy together to make sure that the work done by ALSWA runs smoothly. Lawyers also represent parents in concern proceedings in the Children’s Courts throughout WA. ALSWA family law staff make safe courts that deal with family law and concern issues know about cultural matters that apply, such as communication styles, how children are raised, and the importance of children and family in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This includes visiting men, women and children in prisons and juvenile detention centers, assisting their families by developing relationships with the Department of Corrective Services staff and outer agencies to aid in the through care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners in their integration from prison to the community. The law and legal system are to be used to bring about social justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as a whole. This requires that strategies be developed and impaired in areas of legal advice, legal representation, legal education, legal research, policy development and law reform. ALSWA is responsive to change and is committed to developing a Statewide network of services that are accessible by all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. ALSWA understands that cooperation with other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organizations, Government, other legal services and apropos agencies is an essential component of the labor it does. The contribution of Executive Committee members, staff, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and volunteers and supporters within the general community is highly valued. His involvement with the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA spans back to the 1970’s when he worked as a FieldCourt Officer for seven years. Greatly committed to the labor of ALSWA, Michael supports and promotes the vital role this organization plays in striving for justice and supporting our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within the justice system. A previous President of the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA, he beginning became involved with the organization during the 1970’s and has been involved with the Executive Committee for approximately 20 years over the organization’s forty year history. Kathy Watson is a Nyngina woman on her mother’s side and Gidga on her father’s and is from Brooke in the West Kimberley. An Executive Community member for the previous three years, she is passionate about legal issues for our Community members and staff of the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA. For Kathy, all issues facing our people are crucial but she would like to see more Cultural input into court matters, particularly within District Courts. Jim is deeply committed to social justice issues, equality and equity for our people and active with our Communities to create more employment and business development opportunities for the future. With a long association with the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA through his role on the Executive Committee, Preston is deeply committed to the issues facing our people and the vital labor done by ALSWA within WA’s justice system. 2015 marks his first involvement with the ALSWA Executive Committee and he looks forward to gaining a greater insight into this State’s justice system and having input into the complex issues facing our peoples. Donald is dedicated to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and feels strongly about keeping our young people out of prison, being supportive of women who confront domestic violence and providing guidance on legal matters. They therefore have a packed accepting of local issues and understand local languages. The main responsibilities of a Court Officer are: To represent clients in the Court of Petty Sessions and Children’s Court for pleas of guilty, not guilty, remands and bail applications. To aid in ensuring strong and thriving communication between ALSWA lawyers and clients. Continuing legal education is provided throughout a Court Officer’s employment.

This was to utilize the talent, expertise and ability of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to ensure their participation in ALSWA’s development. The competition proved to be very successful and the tall caliber of entries made the selection process difficult. This logo became the official logo of the organization. It is only through the goodwill of our supporters that ALSWA can adequately advocate, lobby and yield a potent voice nationally and internationally on the continued struggles and inequality faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
